Description

Course Overview

Sustainable Development Goals: Moving from siloed action to an integrated approach provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand the SDGs, recognise connections between development priorities, and design coordinated actions across sectors and organisations.

The course explores the transition from the Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015) to the Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2030). Participants learn how an integrated approach connects social, economic, and environmental priorities, strengthens collaboration, and addresses the unintended effects of isolated interventions.

Course Duration and Schedule (16 hours)

9-11 November 2026

The deadline is 5 November 2026

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the transition from the MDGs to the SDGs and the purpose of the 2030 Agenda.
  • Understand the connections between the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
  • Identify how siloed planning and implementation can limit progress.
  • Map connections between SDGs, recognising opportunities for mutual benefit and potential trade-offs.
  • Apply systems thinking to analyse development challenges and identify effective interventions.
  • Engage stakeholders and propose arrangements for coordinated action across sectors.
  • Develop an integrated action plan with clear responsibilities, resources, and measurable indicators.
  • Apply inclusion and the principle of leaving no one behind to planning and evaluation.

Course Content

The course is organised around two units:

  • Unit 1: Understanding the SDGs and Their Interconnections—the transition from MDGs to SDGs, the 2030 Agenda, the three dimensions of sustainable development, limitations of siloed approaches, systems thinking, and relationships between goals and targets.
  • Unit 2: Integrated Planning and Implementation—stakeholder engagement, policy coherence, cross-sector partnerships, inclusive decision-making, resource planning, monitoring, and development of a practical SDG action plan.

The eight sessions cover:

  1. From MDGs to SDGs: The evolution of the global development agenda and the scope of the SDGs.
  2. Understanding Sustainable Development: Connecting social, economic, and environmental priorities.
  3. Recognising Siloed Action: Identifying fragmented responsibilities, disconnected projects, and barriers to collaboration.
  4. Systems Thinking and SDG Connections: Mapping causes, relationships, mutual benefits, trade-offs, and unintended consequences.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement and Inclusion: Identifying stakeholders, engaging affected communities, and applying the principle of leaving no one behind.
  6. Integrated Planning and Partnerships: Aligning objectives, coordinating responsibilities, and identifying resource requirements.
  7. Monitoring and Learning: Selecting relevant targets and indicators, establishing baselines, and using evidence to improve implementation.
  8. Practical Project and Review: Presenting an integrated SDG action plan and receiving feedback.

Training Methodology

The proposed training approach combines:

  • Online presentations: Tutor-led explanations of key topics, supported by development examples and discussion.
  • Self-paced learning: Guided reading, study materials, quizzes, and reflection activities.
  • Case studies: Analysis of development challenges, such as the connections between water, food, energy, health, and climate.
  • Practical assignments: Stakeholder mapping, SDG interconnection analysis, and evaluation of potential trade-offs.
  • Integrated action-planning project: Development of a proposal addressing a selected challenge through coordinated contributions to several SDGs.
  • Assessment and feedback: Knowledge checks, review of practical assignments, and feedback on the final project.

Tutor feedback supports participants throughout the course and helps them strengthen their analysis and practical application.
